Have you ever tried an Indian Head Massage? The benefits of this type of massage may assist with a variety of common physical and emotional problems.  Morag Scally, one of our fantastic team of massage therapists in Reading at Reflex Spinal Health, explain some of the benefits.

What Does Indian Head Massage Do?

1.  May help to prevent migraines, neck based headaches and back pain

Tension across your shoulders, neck and up to your head can lead to headaches (including migraine headaches) and back pain. This tension can lead to development of poor posture. The postural trend can become chronic, and if persistant these symptoms can even lead to ongoing depression.

Your Indian Head Massage will begin with gentle pressure to specific points on your upper back, arms and across your shoulders. The aim is to loosen these muscles and ease the knots felt in them. We then move up to the neck and head and work around the skull.  The aim here is to relieve muscular trigger points and stimulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain.

2.  Detoxify your body by stimulating improved lymphatic drainage

Indian Head Massage stimulates and helps lymphatic drainage and blood flow from your neck.  Improved lymph drainage allows the naturally produced toxic waste to be excreted from your body.  Most of us have poorly functioning lymph systems due to bad posture and by breathing incorrectly.  This is closely linked to our now common sedentary lifestyles.  We cannot breathe as we are designed to if we are slouching! Without a normal breathing pattern your lymph ducts get clogged up with toxins.

3.  Relieve insomnia and improve your quality of sleep

Insomnia and poor sleep quality are often side-effects, and symptoms, of stress. An Indian Head Massage will immediately relieve your stress and promote relaxation by easing your physical symptoms.  If you find an effective way to relax then you are more likely to find sleep easier and feel much more rested upon waking.

4.  Relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression

Massage improves the supply of oxygen to your brain. This is a great way of reducing anxiety levels and of improving your mood. Obviously oxygen is essential for life! It helps you think clearly and creatively. A very similar effect is experienced through regular moderate exercise.

5.  Improve your memory….. what was that?

Commonly short-term memory loss occurs because our brains become overwhelmed with many disorganised thoughts.  If this happens it makes it really difficult to sort this information overload, and process thoughts and experiences.

There is so much press coverage now about the benefits to your health from improving your mindfulness.  Mindfulness and meditation can help to slows your thoughts down. When you do this sensual awareness takes over, your thoughts quieten and your awareness is brought more sharply into focus. It is a bit like someone pressing your 'reset' button!  As many people really struggle to stand still for five minutes, let alone attempt effective meditation, then an Indian Head Massage may be just the thing to help.  It feels great and makes you stop and relax for a while!
